SWNIC

South Worcester Neighborhood Improvement Corp

"We believe that the opportunity for all individuals to shape their own lives lies in practical hope – a realistic understanding of what can be achieved in life. We believe that neighborhoods are much more than buildings, streets, houses, recreation venues, and businesses. We believe that first and foremost, neighborhoods are people – Individuals, families, store owners, service providers. Mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, singles, couples, and seniors. And we believe that an empowered individual brings strength to his or her family, and ultimately to the neighborhood in which they live."

Dismas House

"Dismas is Family. You feel welcome whenever you enter any of our homes. Since 1988, Dismas House has been welcoming former prisoners back to greater Worcester. In our homes, Dismas House, Dismas Family Farm, and the Father John Brooks House, and our other apartments, former prisoners are engaged in the hard work of rebuilding lives, and rekindling hope for themselves and their families. Families with kids, volunteer Board members, live-in international students, and church groups help create the family atmosphere by breaking bread with residents and spending the holidays with them. Our dedicated staff - many former prisoners themselves - provide key educational, recovery, and reentry tools to our residents."

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Of Central Massachusetts

"Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest, Inc. is "as old as friendship and as new as today." Our Organization was founded in the spring of 1963 as Big Brothers of Worcester County, initially serving seven needy boys by matching them in supportive mentoring relationships with community volunteers. The demand for Big Sisters made it clear that the time had come to extend services to girls, and a Big Sisters chapter was added to the Agency in 1974. The President of the Board of Directors told a local reporter, “To turn our heads from the needs of young girls would not permit us to fulfill our responsibility as a social service agency.” The name of the Organization changed to reflect the newest program addition: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Worcester County, Inc."

Homes for our Troops

"Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) is a privately funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization building specially adapted, mortgage-free homes nationwide for the most severely injured Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of these Veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives. Since its inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar donated to Homes for Our Troops has gone directly to our program services for Veterans. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live, and continues its relationship with the Veterans after home delivery to assist them with rebuilding their lives."
