USB Connectors - Change is Upon Us

USB Connectors - Change is Upon Us

The future of connectors is finally seeing the light of day. How many times have you had to inspect your laptop or smartphone’s connection port to make sure you are plugging in a cord the correct way? These days are numbered. A new connector is hitting the market and it goes by the name USB Type-C, and you guessed it, it’s reversible.

Wearable Tech

When someone asks you for the time, do you check your cell phone? This is becoming more and more standard as people have retired their old fashion watches in lieu of carrying their cell phones. All of those empty wrists out there have left the market wide open for the rapidly expanding market of wearable tech. Two of the most popular smart watches on the market today are the Pebble and the Galaxy Gear.

The first big player to the market was The Pebble. The Pebble smart watch was born on Kickstarter, a crowd source funding website where inventors can pitch inventions, ask for funding, and in return, the funder will not only receive the finished product but may also have some say in its creation. The Pebble broke Kickstarter records as the highest funded project to date. The inventors of the Pebble asked for $100,000 and received an astounding $10.3M. The Pebble then went from concept to creation in about 6 months. This smart watch has an E ink display, the same display that the original Kindle has. This E ink display allows the watch to run for about a week in between charges. The watch can be set to vibrate when you receive a text message, email, or phone call. Instead of pulling out your phone you can just read the text or email right on your wrist. You can even setup messages that allow you to send replies right from the watch. If you use your phone to play music the Pebble can control the playback of the music. My personal favorite feature of the watch is the alarm. We can all relate to sleeping through a cell phone alarm but it is very hard or impossible to sleep through your wrist vibrating. There are thousands of watch faces to choose from and users can even make their own. The Pebble connects to your smart phone via Bluetooth and is compatible with both iPhones and Android phones. The Pebble is available in polycarbonate ($150) or metal ($249). Both models are water proof, shock proof, and come in several different colors.

After the success of the Pebble, several other manufactures have jumped on the bandwagon. In November, Samsung released the Galaxy Gear smart watch. The Gear picks up where the Pebble left off, offering all of the same features plus a full color touchscreen display, camera, microphone, and speakers. In addition to doing everything the Pebble does, the Gear allows you to take and view pictures and video, it runs a growing number of apps right on the watch, and you can even make phone calls using just the watch. The Galaxy Gear is currently only compatible with four smart phone: the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 (non-Verizon version), and Galaxy Mega.

There are a handful of smart watches out there right now with several more being released this year. If you need some assistance in choosing the right smart watch for you please feel free to contact Machado Consulting and we will be more than happy to assist you.
