"Applix has been based in Massachusetts for more than 20 years," said Milt Alpern, CFO, Applix, Inc. "Our commitment to the community extends beyond business operations here: many of our senior managers and employees participate and take leadership roles in a wide variety of local and national non-profit agencies. Helder exemplifies the high quality, community-oriented spirit at Applix. This award is well deserved and we are pleased to support Helder in his efforts." Machado actively volunteers in various area churches, soup kitchens, Junior Achievement, and at the Sutton Elementary School, in Sutton, MA, and coaches the Sutton Youth Soccer league. Machado and his family will also be participating in an upcoming walk-a-thon for the Massachusetts Chapter of the ALS Association. "Many people do not have the opportunities I have had in my life," said Machado. "As a result, I value philanthropy. While I'm not in the position to be the typical philanthropist who donates large sums of money, I can be generous with my time and skills and receive a great deal back from volunteering."
Machado also currently serves in the Massachusetts Army National Guard Reserves and served honorably in the 3rd Infantry Division on active duty during Desert Storm. Upon retiring from full-time military service, Machado earned an Associates Degree in Engineering from the Community College of RI and a Bachelor's of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
